Essentially, it's the branch of chemistry that deals with any chemical compounds that contain carbon. It was called such because it was initially assumed that organic compounds were just related to life processes, but as people developed a greater understanding of chemistry, it was found that organic molecules do not always pertain to life.

The subject will be used as a support for cell biology and genetic studies, for organic chemistry pertains to biochemistry, which in turn pertains to human life.
