That a super-hero will wear a full-length skin-tight costume under his regular street clothes... even on the hottest day in August on a New York City street.. well, okay. Yeah, I used to wonder the same thing when I would read reprints of Kirby's Cap in TALES OF SUSPENSE. It was definitely a vast improvement when they started having him carry it in an artist's circular portfolio case.

That did make more sense, although I wonder if artists remembered to draw the portfolio case or just had Cap magically change without explaining the shield.

I don't remember the original 1940s stories ever even trying to explain it. Steve Rogers just ditched his Army uniform and the shield was just there. Maybe he got the Highlander trick.

I always suspected Reed Richards ran a costume shop on the side, selling outfits made from his patented 'unstable molecules'. It would have helped finance some of his other experiments. The shield could have been some adamantium/titanium/unstable alloy.

This was never in the comics that I recall, but as soon as he was revived, Captain America was working with Giant-Man. It wouldn't have been too far off base to have Henry Pym rig up a little cigarette case or something with a few capsules of reducing and enlarging gas to make the shield about as big as a silver dollar until needed.
