The Man of Steel looks a little bilious

It's November 20, 1940 and the first Superman balloon appears in the Macy's parade. He doesn't look too comfortable. I'd expect a confident smile or a stern no-nonsense glare, but he just looks as if maybe he had too much to eat or needed a nap.
Oh well, we all have our off days.

That grotesquerie is probably the Superman robot that the bad guys are about to activate and send on a crime spree.

A lot of the early Macy's balloons have an unpleasant look to them, but that might just be my perception. The practice of outlining the lips and seperate teeth was conventional in the late 19th and early 20th century but it looks a bit off today.
