A simple and effective design by Ethel Franklin Betts Bains from 1917. Every war of course results in thousands of displaced people in rags without a home to return to. And the streams of refugees settling wherever they can often causes unrest and bitter feelings in their turn, keeping the domino effect of unhappiness going.

I'm reminded of another famous pinup girl for the horrors of war; Sharbat Gula's extraordinary hazel/green eyes got her two NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC covers, and not much else; the latter picture--in which she's thirty at most--says all that needs to be said about the effect of seventeen years of business as usual in Afghanistan.

Aside from the war aspect, I'd guess that the climate and general stress of living in Afghanistan would not lead to keeping a fresh youthful appearance.
