Hey ho, who is there/No one but me, my dear...

Carson sighed and rubbed at his eyes. The words on the laptop screen were starting to blur this late at night. The first two women to fall ill were just about to be released, tomorrow morning if their fever came down that last half-degree. He'd spoken with all of them except Rachel, and Radek had input the data into a flowchart to track their ( Read more... )

Just as Carson was exiting the infirmary, looking tired and haggard, bleary-eyed and worn, John rounded the corner and nearly ran into him. He caught his husband by both shoulders, and, after a brief look, and without saying a word, enveloped him in a long, gentle hug. He'd been directing Marines all over the base, looking for still-downed women, playing packhorse for the nurses, and generally trying to make himself useful. From the look of it, Carson's night had been at least as tiring if not moreso. He hadn't had time to check in on Rachel more than a quick glance or two, and he figured the dead of night was just as good a time as any--it wasn't as if he was going to sleep.

"going to go rest for a bit?" he asked quietly, still holding Carson's larger, but shorter body close, his hand slowly sliding up his nape and into his dark hair.

Carson huffed when John barrelled into him, but he smiled when embraced. His arms went around the taller man's waist automatically, resting his head on John's chest. "Aye, love. my eyes are crossing and I'm still not seeing any patterns. I'll do her no good if I collapse myself."

He looked up into worried green eyes. Carson knew full well why John was here so late. "I know ye can't sleep, Johnnie. If I had room, I'd let ye pull a gurney over, but I'm afraid ye're stuck with a chair." He glanced around and dropped his voice. "I'll not tell, though, if ye crawl in behind her. Just mind the IV on her hand, love. Ye can't make her any warmer than she is." He sighed and pulled John into an exhausted kiss.

She smiled to see Lt. Col. Sheppard curled up in the hospital bed behind his wife. Exhaustion had finally overtaken him, and he'd slept most of the night curled behind her. His eyes snapped open and tracked her for a second as she drew close in the early morning light. Dr. Baker spoke softly so as not to disturb the other patients ( ... )
