Heh! It looks like you've got the hang of it! You've figured out how to upload a userpic, at least! :) Once you get the hang of it, the hardest part will be remembering to make the updates!

I just skipped lines between paragraphs to get the space. Live Journal doesn't let you indent new paragraphs, so I just skip lines instead. This is the only place you can get away with that! :)
It just takes some getting used to. In a week or so, you'll be a pro at this!
Hey Dr. Angel Cann! I was wondering how this whole live journal thing works? Do we write about whatever we want or do you give us prompts? Thanks so much! See you Thursday.
It depends on which class you're in. For English 1301, Composition I, two entries per week need to be somehow related to class. One entry per week can be about whatever you like, a "free" entry. For this week, your introduction counts as a class-related entry.
Occasionally, I'll post writing prompts for you, and those will count as class-related entries that you can post in your journals. Other than that, class-related entries can be about what we did in class, the readings you've done, your progress on the paper you're working on ... things like that.

Live Journal only lets you have userpics of 100x100 pixels. Any userpics you upload are automatically reduced to this size. This is so your Friends page doesn't take forever to load! If everyone had huge userpics, your friends page would take forever to read!

I hope you weren't expecting great things from the 5-minute Diagnostic Essay. :) I do have a question about it though. What kinds of things will you be able to tell about a person's writing skills from a small snippet of writing like the one we did today?

Good question! Basically, I can see what your writing style is. I can see how much you produce in five minutes -- whether you are the type of writer who writes without stopping and goes back to fix things later, or the type of writer who thinks a lot before putting things on paper. I can also tell if you're the type of writer who spellchecks everything before turning it in, or if that's a habit you need to develop. I can also start to spot what your particular areas of development are -- comma splices, paragraph development, subject-verb agreement, and so on.
Plus, the topic is sort-of tied to the novel we'll be reading, so I'm interested to see what your response to the question is! :)
