In Sickbay

Jun 01, 2010 10:27

Doctors very rarely make good patients. Boyce was no exception. The nurses had finally given up on trying to keep him in bed. God forbid he should actually get some rest. Instead he ambled around Sickbay trying to walk off some of the sluggishness that came with heavy painkillers. His arm, now in a cast and wrapped, rested protectively in a ( Read more... )

Pike hadn't woken up yet since the surgery. A fact that the nurses and med techs hadn't minded too much since the doctor had hyposprayed him into oblivion because up to that point, he was still trying to get up and make his way back to the bridge. At least while he was unconscious, they could treat him better.

But the blood transfusions and surgery part was over...now they waited for him to come around again.

The first thing Pike noticed was the color of the ceiling. Not something you tend to notice, even if you were on a starship for years at at time. He sighed, blinking and trying to focus.

"That sounds messy. Will I make it?" he asked it with a lighthearted tone, at least for Pike....just in case it turned out differently.

"Oh you'll make it," is Boyce's immediate response.

"Good to hear that," Pike almost smiles, the way that Boyce said it, it sounded like Pike had no choice but to get better.

"Just as long as you don't skip out early," he added seriously.

Fearing his eyes might close of their own volition, Boyce once again rose from his seated position. He had a better chance of staying awake if he was on his feet.

"Right..." Pike didn't want to do it, but for the good of all, especially his CMO, he decided to strike a bargain. "Look, if I promise not to leave this bed for 24 hours, will you take it easy yourself? I'd rather have a CMO in one piece when I do get back on the bridge instead of one on his back in one of his own beds."

He'd struck a bargain of his own with his nurses. Once he'd seen Pike regain consciousness and was sure his condition was stable, Phil had agreed to 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep. He, of course, wasn't about to tell his Captain this.

He feigned serious thought. Finally he nodded.

"Good. Glad we understand each other." Pike shifted his weight in the bed with a wince, finding a different spot. "You might as well start right now, that's an order."

'Taking it easy' could be defined in so many ways. Boyce would at least like to see his friend drift back off to sleep before he himself succumbed to the inevitable. Not one to disobey orders, he found the only chair in the room and sunk into it. He could 'take it easy' there.

Oh no, Boyce isn't going to get away with that. "In a bed, man. I'm not going anywhere. Promise."

Phil regarded him seriously for a moment. Pike was nothing if not a man of his word. If he said he wasn't going anywhere, he surely wouldn't. With that confidence to bolster him, Phil managed to once again stand. The up and down was using up all that he had left.

"I'll be back in twelve hours."

"Good. I'll be here." Pike watches him walking away and sighs, looking over at the nurses milling about. He hated to see his friend hurting but it was probably just as bad for him to try and stick around watching him. Right now, neither of them could help the other till they were better.

Pike leaned back in the pillow, trying not to think about how things were on the bridge...Number One could handle anything that came her way, he was sure of that. They'd be onto the next mission once he was mended, maybe even earlier if it was required of the starship to be there.

It was going to be tough to stay in bed...

It wouldn't be as tough as he expected. A hypospray connected with his arm.

Pike jumps and growls at the nurse, "That was uncalled for, I should have you demoted for that..." Confound doctors and their orders...and nurses who snuck up on you and walked away like...

Like...

Pike really couldn't think of what nurses were like, he was too tired. Soon he was sleeping again, a bit more comfortable than before.
