I posted this to muffincostumes but realized that there are a good number of you who don't follow that blog but who are very likely to be able to advise me on a few of these matters. So if this is showing up on your f-lists twice: mea culpa! I'll try not to make it too common of an occurrence.

You. Are. BRILLIANT. So many good ideas! I am unabashedly drooling over the knit chain-mail. WANT!!!

Looking at the reference picture you found (great details), I'm becoming increasingly daunted by the prospect of putting this ensemble together. I may have to consider some alternatives, especially considering I've never done cosplay armor before.

Me want too. I have the scales, I just have to figure out how to do it with crochet.

You can do it; it may just take longer than you were originally thinking.

I did some greaves and shoulder and elbow pieces for a costume for Phebe from craft foam. The key to it is it is shapeable with heat. O cut it into the shape of the armor I wanted then heated it with a hair dryer wrapping it around something roundish while it's hot. A heat gun would work even better I think. I believe this is the tutorial I referred to: http://entropyhouse.com/penwiper/costumes/helmsdeep.html . The pros, it's extremely lightweight and inexpensive.

Oh! Craft foam looks completely doable! I'll definitely think about that. I'm all for "inexpensive" and "light-weight," after all :) Thank you!

It was really pretty easy. There are many tutes out there on the interwebs, too. I also used FOE (fold over elastic) to make the armore pieces all slip-on.

That was going to be my next question: how on earth do you keep it attached to your costume?? I love the idea of elastic! Sounds much more comfortable than other options :)
