Hmm, reference pics for the "red stone" necklace? Couldn't find them on youtube ( ... )

Wow! Thank you so much - this advice is going to be massively helpful. The "juices" are definitely flowing; I can't wait to start looking around for potential stones and settings this weekend!

Okay, now I've googled images of Melisandre, and it looks as if the stone definitely has to be red (and not fire-opal looking) and probably round, oval or teardrop shaped. People have used lots of different designs for the rest of it, though. It looks as if even the TV series had two different designs for it: one a relatively simple choker with very large hexagonal chain-links, and the other a very elaborate mesh with the same kind of hexagonal links in it.

But the fan-art itself varies a lot. I've seen:
- simple chain (usually gold)
- ribbon-choker black with gold swirls
- gold-chain mesh with red beads at the nodes
- wide gold (or copper) chain choker
- double gold chain with gold beads
- silver chain with twisty links and matching pendant

So it looks as if the potential designs that people have already thought of give you lots of leeway.

I've never seen the show, but I just finished the most recent of the novels. If I were making it I'd do a choker I think. Maybe with a big chunky red stone and some braided leather thong. Finding the stone would likely be the hardest part, as whatever stone I ended up with would dictate how I attached/wore it.

The Hobbes definitely looks knitted, might have even been loomed with something smaller-gauged than a knifty knitter.

Hope the home closes soon!

I'm definitely more interested in getting a book accurate Melisandre than worrying about copying the show conception - although the show did a pretty wicked job with her! I love the series, by the bye, and it's definitely worth watching if you've enjoyed the books! First season is more spot-on with the book than season two, but still pretty awesome.

I think I may go with the braided leather thong for whatever sort of stone I end up using. But how do I keep it on my neck if I do - are there closures for that sort of setting, or would you just tie it in place? I would hate for it to fall off...

You have a few different options.

1. Fasten cord-ends to the ends of the leather thonging.
See: http://www.firemountaingems.com/Shop/Cord-Ends--ch4786lcfy93h?T=T1B
Then fasten the three ends together with a jump-ring, and fasten a clasp to the jump ring. And do the same at the other end, with the other half of the clasp.
Some people would also add an eye-pin and a metal cone to hide the ends of the leather.

2. Do a classic overhand knot, but make one of the strands longer than the others, so that you have a tail at each end. Then you can attach the clasp to the single thong rather than having to deal with all three. Or you could make the tail longer and tie a knot when you put the necklace on... though that could prove a problem when you try to take the necklace off. Perhaps you could do a bow? Though that would be awkward to do up ( ... )

Well, there's always clear glue if you are really worried. I could swear I remember seeing a tute once for using soap molds to make big faceted "jewels", I don't remember if they were resin or what.

My brain is thinking that they wouldn't have drills for putting holes in the gems... which is why I would go for braided leather or a bezel for a big stone, because they do have the ability to work metal, so there's always a bezel with prongs to hold the jewel and a hole at each end to attach the thong if you go the bezel route.
