Game of Thrones, s1 ep1

A few of you asked me to let you know my thoughts on the Game of Thrones series from HBO. Well, I got it in the mail yesterday and we watched the first episode after dinner this evening. If you haven't seen the series and don't want to be spoilered, you may not want to read under the cut. I may be especially spoilery since I've read the books and I ( Read more... )

Don't get me wrong, I hate how they messed with Drogo and Daenerys as well. But that's not exactly how I remember their wedding night? I remember he kept saying "no" while she was crying, as in "Don't be sad," which was sweet. The unraveling of the braid came after, when they went out in the middle of the camp and had sex Westerosi style (aka not doggy/horsy style) and knocked her up with The Stallion Who Mounts The World. But I tended to kind of skim Dany's chapters anyway, especially in later books ( ... )

You're probably right about Drogo and Daenarys; it's been a few months since I've read the first book, and I'm finding it difficult to dredge up proper memories of the goings-on. I dunno, I guess I just expected a little more tenderness. But yeah, I expected the gratuitous nudity and sex - as you say, this is HBO we're talking about! I don't mind so much for myself, but it's a bit awkward to watch with your parents.

I'll be interested to see the scenes that were added in. I hope they're well done and canon-compliant! I hear what you're saying about Tyrion, and I don't like that he's being portrayed only as a drunk and a whoremonger in this first episode - an episode which is supposed to set these characters in our minds for the remainder of the series! I'm just crossing my fingers that they improve upon that as we go since Tyrion is easily one of my favorite characters in this messed up world of fiction.

Most awkward/exploitative/gross scene ever or MOST AWKWARD/EXPLOITATIVE/GROSS SCENE EVER?

This show reminds me why I don't watch premium cable more often. And makes me thankful that my only prior experience with HBO (Flight of the Conchords) only ever TALKED about naked people and didn't actually show any.

In this first episode, we are essentially given a crash course in... well, everything! And here's where I start to get a little skeptical, mainly because I feel like had you not read the books you wouldn't know what the heck was going on.It's super top-heavy, for sure. I watched the first episode twice, because I had absolutely no idea what was going on the first time. (I didn't even realize the two blonds at Winterfell were siblings, so while I knew she was the queen and he wasn't the king, I didn't realize it was incest on top of adultery.) When I watched it the second time, I was able to figure out who was who and what was going on with them. It'll slow down a little after this. They almost skipped introduction and went full-on into the story, but it definitely settles down ( ... )

You make a good point about Dany and Drogo. And you know, daphoenix pointed out that I may have had it wrong; that their first sexual encounter isn't the one where they bond. So *shrug* it's not going to taint my experience with the show, but I'm still keeping an eye out for weird creative license stuff.

I love the show and I'm dying to see the second season.

I agree, way too much skin, although I wouldn't mind seeing more male nudity *G*

John and Tyrion are my favorite characters so far.

Dix

I LOVE JOHN AND TYRION! Now, granted, I start to get a little frustrated with John by the third book, but Tyrion just grows on me. As for the nudity, well, perhaps I wouldn't mind seeing John Snow show off a little bit. There's just excessive breasts in this first episode, and I know it only gets worse. I don't need to see those *points* I've got my own.

Oh god, my purity...
