So, you've probably heard, but the sixth series of Downton Abbey will be the last. Thoughts? Things you'd like to see happen? Things you expect to happen?

I'd rather it ends now, when it's still big, than in a couple of years after losing viewers because it lasted too long.

I totally expect Lady Violet to die this season, maybe in the last episode, so that the Christmas episode will be a be lighter to end the show. I'd be really surprised if she makes it to the end of the show, really.

Otherwise, I'd really love Edith to finally find love, and keep it. Same for Mary. (And Tom, if we hear about/see him again. Why is it that the youngest generation of the family can't have two living parents?)

Also, I hope that this will be a happier season for Anna and Bates. They deserve to be happy and I wish Fellowes would stop throwing things at them.

I find myself not devestated that it will end, especially because it's planned. I agree on Violet dying, but I think your point about it happening before the Christmas special is plausible.

Why is it that the youngest generation of the family can't have two living parents?

The extrinsic answer is actors leaving! But if it had been because of WW1 or the influenza, it would have made much more sense.

I really do hope Edith gets happiness, and it would be nice for me to watch Anna and Bates without sighing!

I would definitely be much more sadder if we learned now that season 5 was the last. At least we're going to have a proper send-off for the show.

The extrinsic answer is actors leaving! But if it had been because of WW1 or the influenza, it would have made much more sense.

I understand that for Sybil and Matthew, but not for Michael. He wasn't a regular, so he didn't need to be in every episode. Maybe Fellowes just like being cruel with Edith.

It really is always better when the ending is planned, and although a few things ended satisfactorily last season, there was a lot that didn't.

Maybe Fellowes just like being cruel with Edith. Quite probably, although it would be nice if he adjusted his view. Hasn't she suffered enough? Plus, as you say, it puts the youngest generation in an odd position.

I would like to see Edith - gasp! - get a job and start living. How''s that newspaper you inherited getting along?

I would like to see Thomas find love, however clandestine given the times.

I'm interested to see if they'll pay off Daisy's studies. What the heck is she studying for?

I'm over Mary and could care less what happens to her. Same with Anna & Bates. Their storylines were just too repetitive and I lost interest.

I'm hoping they defy all odds and don't kill off Violet, but if there's one thing I've learned about Downton, it's to expect the expected!

Edited to add - can't wait to see how Carson & Mrs Hughes are together. She's going to be Mrs Carson now, won't she? Delightful.

HAHAHA YES! Omg, I need Edith to DO something that's not being miserable and wallowing. I need her to like, take charge of her life. To have some agency.

I'm over Mary and could care less what happens to her.
LOL! I love Mary but this is fucking hilarious. I have some opinions about what I'd like for her that I have come to realize no one else shares (-_____-) but whatever. I'm still interested to know how they end her story arc.

I also want Thomas to find a boyfriend and live in gay bliss, and become a great person because he's suddenly not living in misery and self loathing! But... I think more realistically, he'll end up alone and bitter and always be miserable and horrible. Oh well.

Heh. Yes, that's a good point. I basically want a happy Edith, and if it came to a choice, I'd rather Edith got a romantic send-off than Mary. But it would be good for dith to do more with the magazine.

I'm hoping they defy all odds and don't kill off Violet, but if there's one thing I've learned about Downton, it's to expect the expected!

I think they're bound to. Maggie Smith had pretty much said this would be her last series and with the episode where Violet was sick, they were basically preparing us for it.

Ugh it breaks my heart! She is the most genuine, kind, loving person and I just want her to be HAPPY.

I love your Mary/Branson idea. I'd totally buy that, they had more in common than any of her other suitors recently.

I predict that not only Violet will die, but at least like 2 or 3 more people. One of them will be Bates, I believe. He will be hanged for that murder and Anna will live in perpetual misery and never remarry. She might have a kid before he dies and start that Inn on her own and forever reminisce sadly about Bates.
OMG you're killing me, that's such a dire prediction! There's no way they're going to kill off Bates, but I like the way you think. I used to love him, but the way he seethes over any mention of Anna's rapist is starting to give me the creeps.

He's going to find his Wooster and go off and set up house in some swanky flat, hiding in ( ... )

At this point, all I really and truly want (read: NEED!) to happen is that Carson and Mrs. Hughes get married and live happily ever after and neither of them dies in the name of angst. This is my one remaining Downton dream.

I hadn't thought that they wouldn't, but now I'm worried. (I speak as an Elsie Hughes fan more than a shipper.)

Personally, I feel it should have ended after Season 3. "DOWNTON ABBEY" could have been a . . . well, decent trilogy about a family and their servants before, during and after World War 1. Instead, Julian Fellows and ITV stretched the post-war years longer than they should.

And to be honest, I thought the show's writing quality had been declining for several years.

I think the last couple seasons could have been improved by doing like season 1 and 2. Season 1 covered 1912-1914, and season 2 covered 1916-1919. But season 3 covered 1920, 4 covered 1921, and 5 covered 1922. Making season 3 cover something like 1920-1923, or even 1922-1925 (with the prospect of the Land Act on the horizon, changing how the inheritance is given out, since Mary would be able to inherit her mother's money, if I understand it correctly). Then we could easily be hitting the 1930s by season 5 or 6, with the rise of Hitler and WW2 looming. Then season 6 could cover the run up to the war, and the Xmas special close it out by being set either 1945, and the end of it, or a few years later, and seeing what happened to everyone.

There's an argument for that, certainly, but what I have liked about the later seasons is that the compressed time in which they're set has meant immediate reactions, instead of people having an emotional response to something that happened months ago.

I get your point, but I also feel like it means that plotlines really drag out. Mary's romances, the death of Green, etc have gone on and on and on and it's not entertaining any more it's just boring. If they were skipping over more time they'd have to wind them up and move on.
