Clark considers that briefly. "So, you like it when I get all he-man, but you can't stand it when I want you to be careful and not put yourself in situations where you could be hurt and you know what I mean by that."
Then he eyes her. "I'm trying to figure out how that works. Physical dominance is okay, but emotional protectiveness isn't."
"Oh, you can put me down if you want, cheri." Ground or truck, she won't mind either way. "I just like it when you pick me up."

Restating old facts is a surefire way to avoid saying embarrassing things about yourself!
So is leaning on your boyfriend's shoulder and snuggling up to him. Cutely.

Tiny sigh.

It's evidently difficult for her to say that. You can tell by the shifty movements and bucketload of qualifiers.
