Many old people take prescription drugs. Although there are obviously benefits to the drugs, there are drug-related nutritional problems that occur as a result. These include increased need for potassium and changes in appetite caused by antidepressant agents or antibiotics. Multivitamins and supplements are a good idea for older people. Age is the main risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists suggest some of the causes to be altered cell development and brain proteins, high blood pressure and cholesterol and high blood homocysteine. While scientists believe poor nutrition (lack of nutrients etc) does have an effect on Alzheimer’s disease, it is not believed to be the entire cause of it and, as such, a change in diet will not treat Alzheimer’s. Good nutritional choices can prevent it.
