It is not uncommon for young children to put inedible objects such as toys in their mouths. However, chewing on toys is very different than an eating disorder known as 'Pica'. Pica is a condition wherein an individual experiences cravings for nonedible items like soap or sand, for example. A child afflicted with pica will actually eat these nonfood items in an attempt to satisfy the craving. The consumption of non food items poses serious health risks and can even be fatal. It is up to the caregiver to monitor unusual eating behaviors and to notice such red flags. If a child is caught eating nonfood items, the parent or caregiver should first explain to the child that it is unacceptable behavior because it will cause sickness. In most cases, the problem will stop at this - or may require a few reminders before stopping for good. However, when the problem persists, it may be necessary to either remove the item from the child or if it's something like dirt or sand, remove the child from the location of the substance ( ... )

Asthma is a condition that varies in severity, but the outcome can be deadly. As the textbook states, it is one of th emost common childhood chronic diseases. Asthma is a respiratory disease which restricts one's ability to breath. SYmptoms include coughing, wheezing, tightness in the chest, gasping and involuntary expulsions of air. My twin brother suffered with asthma throughout our childhood and too often I witnessed his helplessness as his ability to breath became more and more restricted. At times, he was completely unable to talk and had no other choice but to focus solely on getting th eoxygen his body needed - an ability that those of us without asthma often take for granted. However, there are warning signs or red flags of an impending asthma attack. These signs include coughing excessively and a runny nose - however both of these do not necessarily mean that th eonset of an asthma attack is just around the corner. During an asthma attack, hot watery beverages are a great idea, as the steam and vapors aid in clearing ( ... )

Childhood obesity is an increasingly common problem in our society. It currently affects 20% of u.s. children and that number continues to grow. Childhood obesity is considered a developmental disorder and can lead to social, psychological and long term health problems. Obesity leads to poor self image and self worth, which carries over in to an inablity or lack of motivation to relate to others and have successful relationships. Obesity is a huge factor in cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and illness and is usually an indicator of poor nutritional choices and eating habits, which we all know equates to poor health ( ... )
