Matty well believe that he's the one that broke up with you. In his own mind, his behavior that caused the break up could be the 'reason for it.'

People have a lot of ways to cope. Likely it's his way of coping with the fact you broke up with him.

Don't let it bother you much. Just realize you're far better off not being in a relationship with someone who plays fast and loose with their perception of reality.
