Ah... Hmmm... See, if I say "flying, cameras, anime" then they're things that you write about often anyway. So I have to think harder.

Scarves. Silk scarves. Less burny than rope.

I recognise there's a debate to be had, and some people are very fond of scarves.

The way to stop rope burning is to place it in such a way that it's not going to slide around against skin -- and that usually means using it to secure in place parts that could (initially) hold that position by themselves if they had to, and making sure that any slidey-tightening you do only has rope rubbing against other bits of rope. And try always to have your fingers/hand between any moving rope and your subject's skin as you're applying it.

And scarves tend to bunch and get narrow and cut in, which rope doesn't (if you double/quadruple it up), and silk scarves get expensive when you have to cut them off in a hurry.

Scarves are great for blindfolds, in the "I know you could see out of this if you wanted to but you're not going to try are you" tradition.
