That recent non-announcement

It seems quite likely that other people on your friends list have mentioned this (and jasonshellen's reply hidden under the news post here). If you can't see the the change in FAQ 38 that may be because it hasn't been translated into your language -- try looking at the EN_US version. Isn't adblock on the local client ? In which case they can't see and can't do anything about it any way ... But you just get a load of red x's in stead ..

Aaaand once again LJ have done something which might not seem that unreasonable (if they need the cash then adverts aren't a terrible way to go. Not the decision I'd have made, but it's not my company.) and then ballsed it up completely by treating their users like idiots and not communicating clearly.

Exactly. And it's difficult not to imagine that they'll continue to do so repeatedly in the future

It does seem that some companies (possibly most) don't get the whole customer loyalty thing.

When companies selling real world goods like baked beans change the recipe or whatever they get letters of complaint. All the customer has done is paid for and consumed the product yet they have a strong enough link to write in and complain.

But with something like LJ, the customers create the value of the product and have a large emotional investment in it. Any company blind to the backlash any change, even a well handled one, will provoke should find a new line of business. Yet you constantly see LJ type companies pissing off their user base.

I have some hopes that the new Tor site will provide some measure of social networking function for SF authors, readers and fans (in which count are 90% of my LJ friends). But I still like LJ, for all sorts of different reasons. Until they stitch up permanent accounts, which they certainly will at some point, I'm likely to continue to use the site.

Likewise my paid account. £1 per month doesn't seem too much of an outlay to avoid getting buried in ads.
