a level writing field

 This came up with a friend who writes, and I just figured I'd put it up here, if it helps any newer writers:

If you ever think of yourself as a writer being at a certain "level," I want to disabuse you of that notion.

There are no levels in the writing of novels.

That's very interesting to know, and thank you, Douglas. One always assumes that one starts small (unless one is very lucky) and crawls up (again, with luck) to bigger publishers each time.

I've been lucky to do that, from a POD publisher to Perseus books, but I have to admit that I have allegiances and commitments and friends in smaller presses and it makes me happy to work for them too.
