'Allo. Welcome to New Feathers and all that. Still, Sokka I know you're busy with engagement stuff, I'm sure. So the others who work at the Smithy, can I get some help melting things down? It's a very big order ( Read more... )

[It's the first time Robert has heard Fujiko sound so... well... lost.

Not that he quite hears that tone. But he can actually surmise how she feels, because... well, he's honestly worried about Raphael too.

He takes the time to answer her question, as well.]

Ah, Ms. Mine...

... I have only witnessed a single draft, but at that time, people were taken in... droves. [Hear the shudder in his voice?] There were two main waves - the first, which was announced formally and with whatever equates to officially with that sort of barbaric thing, and the second, which included those who were deemed... "incompatible", in some manner.

...

[Softly:] ... F-Forgive me if this is a little impertinent of me, but... how are you... faring, what with the recent events?

[He means the AU experiment and Raphael's 'napping, of course.]

I see.

Hmn... it's fine. [Lying through her teeth and sounding very forlorn. And like she's going to tear things up.]

I think I want to try tailing one of their robots. But I don't know how to lure it out other than screwing with their wiring. Maybe if I catch one...

[Fujiko is the latest in a long line of people who say "I'm fine" to Robert when they clearly aren't fine. How many people is it now? Let's see - Ami, Helios, Giles and now Fujiko.

It's why Robert hesitates and then mumbles awkwardly:]

Ms. M-Mine, I assure you... if you need to speak to somebody, you... you can do so. I do not mind. After all, you listened quite willingly to my troubles... the only ethical thing I could do is offer you the same, and... I am worried as well...

[Robert doesn't think the droids would be particularly easy to lure out, but he can't really comment because he hasn't actually seen them in action beyond brief flashes in the journals.]

They haven't brought back Raphael back yet, and whatever they're doing it's probably hurting him or worse.

Maybe trying won't do anything other than get me in trouble, but I'm going to do something.

Most assuredly they are torturing him. Ms. Mine, I have had several friends of mine taken by the Malnosso for their barbaric experimentation, and it is never done according to any sort of protocol or with any sanity whatsoever.

It is absolutely abominable.

[The anger in Robert's voice seethes quietly; it's a cold rage, but Robert is too pragmatic and too pacifistic to try to use it.]

Are you intending to attempt to retrieve him? I... do not know how possible it is. In fact, I do not even know if one can encourage the Malnossian droids to show up of one's own accord - they only seem to be dispatched when the Malnosso want them to be.

... The worst-case scenario would be if they took you as well, Ms. Mine... [And that possibility worries Robert. He doesn't want them to be hurt twice as badly.]

A-At any rate. The rest of the Hamatos and myself, as well as any other friends of Raphael's, will certainly do our best to do something for him. I only regret that we cannot do more, but the Malnosso are unwilling to compromise or do any ( ... )

[Thank you Robert. She feels so much better. One day she's going to need to teach you the art of lying.]

I can handle myself. I'll just wait for them to try to kidnap someone else then.

[Pure cold determination.]

[Good luck, Fujiko. You'll need it if you want to teach Robert how to lie.]

You are a... strong and competent woman, Ms. Mine. From what I can see, anyway. [Not that he's actually seen her fight, of course. But anybody who can stick up for herself with somebody like Raph staring her down has got to be tough.]

... If you really do plan to do this, I would suggest a contingency plan. Do you think it might be possible to have some kind of tracking device that would work even outside the barrier...?

... I would just... not wish for anybody else to be hurt any more than what has already happened.

Ah... That is a good idea...

[Mumbles softly.] No one would come for me except one idiot who isn't here though.

... Ms. Mine... were I not as weak as I am, I would.

[He exhales softly.] But in my current state I would be rather a detriment more than anything...

Can you help me make some bugs?

It is outside my usual realm of expertise, but I would be willing to attempt.

[It's a non-violent solution to a problem. Ergo, it's something Robert doesn't mind assisting with. Though he's not entirely naïve to the idea that there won't be any fighting... Still, he's trying not to focus on that part.]

... Perhaps Don would be willing to assist me...? He is an extremely skilled engineer...

Okay. Then that's your job. And to keep Don busy I guess.

Affirmative, Ms. Mine. I will do my best to be an assistance to you.

... Did you have any specific qualifications in mind? [He'd rather work from a strictly-defined plan, of course, but this might be okay too, especially if Don's there to help.]

Thanks!

A small one that can fit in my bra and doesn't give off something that will alert the enemy, but can still reach all the way back into Luceti!

[Fitting in Fujiko's bra shouldn't be difficult. Robert mentally picks up the list of qualifications - it'd have to be subtle and small, not affected by Fujiko's body heat and the like (but perhaps still capable of reading it), with a signal that would be untraceable by most general purpose scanners...

... Difficult with substandard technology, but not impossible.]

I think the main issue will be a signal that can penetrate through whatever they use to sequester the kidnapped villagers from the rest of us...

... If it is beyond the barrier, I regret to say that I have absolutely no idea. My nanocomputer's signalling to Terra cannot seem to escape the barrier either...

Understood. Hm. I guess we'll find out then.

[Trails off with the usual "cute" lilt to her voice, but clearly lost in her own trains of thought.]
