Love bugs are some kind of little beetle that swarms during mating season in Florida (and other parts of the South.) They don't bite, but they're everywhere; apparently they're particularly difficult to scrub off your car. (So everyone on the Space Coast gets this joke.)
Years ago, when a friend of ours was living in Florida, she used to taunt her friends back here when there was a blizzard by saying "It was really cold here, too -- I had to wear long pants." The retort from another friend who had visited there several times was "Yeah, but at least we don't have love bug season."
I've never experienced it, but apparently it was love bug season during this launch, and a particularly bad one.
