Really? See, I was totally let down. I mean sure, it is sexy looking, but the fact that I can't get at the RAM/hard drive/battery is a deal killer for me. I use my MBP as my office-home-travel computer, and need Firewire 800 (not to mention standard Firewire).
I predict that the next refresh of the MB/MBP line in 4 months will be the machine of my dreams. Slimmer, more powerful, lots of connections. Just what I need. Or don't, as my current Mac is the cat's meow at the moment.
Love the thread here at Gizmodo about the Air - http://gizmodo.com/345236/macbook-pro-woes-what-should-i-do. Pretty much sums up all of my feelings about it in the discussion. BTW, one of the commenters uses the term "Booger Sugar" for coke, which I have never heard. Got a good laugh out of that one.
Hey, you need what you need. But I've had my 12" PB for almost 4 years now and I find I rarely use my firewire anymore (though I do have a 120GB external drive that might be firewire only), ditto the optical drive. Unless something else occurs to me, I'm totally comfortable with the tradeoffs involved.
I'll miss the extra speed ethernet, but I used just wireless for a couple of years with no problem, and the 802.11N may be as fast as I need anyway.
Since I'm not in the best financial position to buy right now anyway, and my current PB is still chugging along like a champ, I'll probably still wait to see what else drops in the 4 to 6 month timeframe -- a thinner, lighter, maybe even 13" MBP would be a lot closer to perfect for me. As Gruber says, the MBA isn't really meant to be a primary machine -- so until I can afford a tower (or an iMac) and an MBA, I may have to hold off.
But as a secondary machine, it is just about perfect.
