My extremely brief review of 'Sunshine'

Jul 26, 2007 13:40

Went and saw Sunshine last night with some friends thanks to hindustan's suggestion. I loved it.

By the director of one of my all-time favorite movies, Shallow Grave, as well as Trainspotting and 28 Days Later (which I didn't know until I got to the theater), it's a beautiful and thoughtful sci-fi movie ( Read more... )

Crap, I had no idea Danny Boyle directed it. I had heard exactly _zero_ about it before Hindustan's invite, or I might have made more of an effort.

Although I much prefer to get my "thug life" crappy theater experience in Daly City now. At least the parking is free.

Well, apparently it's in limited release for now (perhaps forever -- most people are confused by this kind of sci-fi), so your options are limited. But I'd probably see it again, so...

Dood I totally want to see this movie, even more now that you liked it too. Plus it has Cillian Murphy, one day he and I will make sweet sweet love.

If you're going to set up rules for yourself in a creative endeavor, those rules should be applied consistently.
But you like Lost, so perhaps we should just agree to ignore each other's criticisms so that we don't find each other annoyingly idiotic.

Oh, sorry! I meant to say "except when fu_urns does it - then it's just cute." It has been corrected.

that, as well, should be applied consistently.
I'll just assume that's supposed to be there whenever my panties start getting bunchy.

You promise? Promise?

The trailer seemed astoundingly stupid and full of the "look at our hollywood overstuffed effects". And
it was super beautiful.

Why does a great director and a fine writer choose something stupidly implausible? Is there such a rush
that they can't call one physicist for a decent reason
to race to the sun? WTF?!

Shit, I'm complaining and I haven't even seen it yet.
I guess I'll watch it, on a comfy chair, while listening
to my favorite band on headphones.

I promise that's the reaction I had. But then, I'm able to suspend disbelief, especially when I've just paid good money to be entertained.

'Sunshine' isn't a documentary from the future, it's science fiction. It was made by a film studio, not the physics department at Cal Tech.

Did you watch 28 Days Later? Did you spend the whole movie thinking, "Argh! There's no way people could get infected and become homicidal maniac zombies in two minutes!! (Couldn't they have called up the CDC for a decent reason that people might suddenly become zombies?)"

The premise of 'Sunshine' is basically: "In a future in which our understanding of physics makes the following possible... "

And so on. Just remember, trailers are often very poor representations of the whole movie -- good or bad.
