(I admit it. I'm trawling the back catalogues for this entry.)
The majority of the time I make mixes for other people - which means I have to try and find a balance between my taste and theirs (some people are soooo picky) - or mixes along random themes (clouds! numbers!), which are all very amusing but not very personal.
This is the only mix so far that I've made "just for me", as it were.

thiruda thiruda - raasathi
talking heads - papa legba
there is a king
that will steal your soul
don't let him catch you,
don't let him get control.
sarah mclachlan - silence
heaven holds a sense of wonder
and i wanted to believe that
i'd get caught up.
kate bush - cloudbusting
'cause every time it rains
you're here in my head
like the sun coming out
ooh, i just know that something good is gonna happen
and i don't know when
but just saying it could even make it happen.
van morrison - when will i ever learn to live in god?
you brought it to my attention everything that was made in God
gown through centuries of great writings and paintings
everything lives in god
seen through architecture of great cathedrals
down through the history of time
is and was in the beginning and evermore shall be.
sufjan stevens - come on! feel the illinoise!
oh, great intentions
i've got the best of interventions
but when the ads come
i think about it now.
celine dion - a new day has come
i see a light in the sky
oh, it's almost blinding me.
delerium feat. sarah mclachlan - silence
in this white wave
i am sinking,
in this silence
in this white wave
in this silence
i believe.
bright eyes - from a balance beam
now i'm staring at the sun, waiting for it to explode.
because a day is gonna come, don't know when but it will come
and then we will finally know the way out of here
and i will throw away this wrinkled map and my chart of stars
and compass, crack'd.
[...]
and we won't have to worry no more
no we won't have to wonder again about
how this song or story ends
about how this song and story will end.
simon & garfunkel - the sound of silence
and the sign said, "the words of the prophets
are written on the subway walls
and tenement halls."
kate bush - under ice
there's something moving
under, under the ice
moving under ice
through water
trying to get out of the cold water
it's me.
something, someone - help them
it's me.
rufus wainwright - one man guy
sure it's kind of lonely
yeah, it's sort of sick
being your own one and only
is a dirty selfish trick.
sarah mclachlan - sweet surrender
are you an angel?
am i already that far gone?
crash test dummies - god shuffled his feet
so someone asked Him, "i beg your pardon,
i'm not quite clear about what you just spoke
was that a parable, or a very subtle joke?"
God shuffled his feet and glanced around at them
the people cleared their throats and stared right back at him
talking heads - slippery people
God help us!
help us lose our minds!
these slippery people
help us understand.
jeff buckley - hallelujah
well it goes like this
the fourth, the fifth
the minor fall and the major lift.

s. p. balasubramaniam - gayatri mantra
oh God! thou art the Giver of Life
Remover of pain and sorrow
the Bestower of happiness
oh! Creator of the Universe
may we receive thy supreme sin-destroying light
may Thou guide our intellect in the right direction.*
The Gayatri Mantra is a highly revered mantra in Hinduism. By many Hindus, the Gayatri is seen as a Divine awakening of the mind and soul, and within it a way to reach the most Supreme form of existence, and the way to Union with Brahman. Understanding, and purely loving the essence of the Gayatri Mantra is seen by many to be one, if not the most powerful ways to attain God.**
* english translation. one of many interpretations.
** shamelessly taken from Wikipedia.
I've said (in the entries I've linked to below) that Nick Hornby's 31 Songs and "One Man Guy" inspired the mix, but I just don't know. I don't think it's a coincidence that just over half the songs on this mix are some of my most favourite songs ever; are the ones that mean an extraordinary amount to me; are the ones that I cannot fully comprehend, or explain why they mean so much.
Background and explanations for the mix and songs chosen can be found
here,
here and
here, just in case anyone is particularly interested or has time to kill.
As always, just ask if you want a particular track.
