This is where I felt it the first time. The universe was cocking the fuck-with-me gun.

01. Why did I not known until now how good Dead Like Me is?! Granted I'm only halfway through Season 1, but I haven't been so interested in a TV show (that's not a procedural drama) since Buffy. Why do I always get into things once they've finished?

02. Does anyone else find it a little sad (upsetting, tear-in-your-eye sad) that the Big Issue guy ( Read more... )

Becausebecausebecause I don't think they've ever shown it on non-cable/digital TV over here, and we've only recently acquired the wonder that is three million channels! But that's kinda irrelevant, seeing as I dled the episodes because I was desperatley bored and a little curious.

VM might be a tough one, I've seen a few random episodes here and there but it's yet to ensnare me. :/

Dead Like Me is one of my favourite shows. It works on so many levels. I love how the comedy complements the darker elements so well, they're never battling each other. The characters are so quirky and interesting too. It's a shame it was cancelled. I haven't had a chance to see the end of the second season yet since I moved out of my parents house around the time that was airing and I didn't have sky here. ;_;

I'm torn between wanting to be a teacher (almost definitely not in this country although my colleagues would probably be weird/boring in Japan and thus not compare to my Teachers-related expectations of hating the kids, leaving classes for fag breaks and endless cups of tea), wanting to be an interpreter (which wouldn't live up to my West Wing-related expectations of sleeping working with important people and having tailor-made suits) or just doing loads of random jobs throughout my life with breaks for fantastic adventure trips and the like. For the experience and whatnot.

Yessss. That's my other fantasy, though this one's infinitely more likely than the bookshop one.

Y'know, I tried Dead Like Me because I adore Mandy Patinkin, but it didn't work for me. That blonde girl annoyed the everyliving shit out of me (and for no good reason) so I never even got past the initial episode.

As far as jobs go, I honestly think most people just fall into them. Very few people end up doing what they want to do and instead look for a midpoint between "it pays the bills" and "it makes me want to kill myself." What I'm doing (counseling) isn't my first choice, but it was the most practical. Ideally, I think people should have more time to research and decide on careers. Current education models just dn't leave sufficient time for exploration.

Heh. I was pleasantly surprised to find Mansy Patinkin in it, though I'm only familiar with him from Criminal Minds. George annoyed the hell out of me too, (and the first few episodes are a bit "meh" IN PLACES) but I pressed on because of boredom. Then the over-identification thing happened

I think people should have more time to research and decide on careers. Current education models just dn't leave sufficient time for exploration.
God, yes. Choosing subjects you want to focus on at 16-18, then narrowing that down even further for university because that's what's going to GET YOU A JOB is so constraining. Especially if you have no idea, feel like you have to choose right this minute and end up in a place you don't what to be.

It really is, particularly when it had a cost attached to it. If you change your major here as an undergraduate, you may end up paying for an extra year or two of school and choosing a good career choice is not, unfortunately, worth the $15,000-30,000 that comes along with that.

There's got to be a better system, whether it's vocational testing or a period of apprenticeship or something.

Questions:
So, er, what colour jelly baby did you choose?
Do you know someone who has had their arm broken by a swan? My mum is really scared of swans because one chased her once - they are NOT to be trusted. Or maybe it was a goose...I do not know.

As for careers, I've known since I was very little that I want to work in education, most likely as a teacher. My problem with that has always been my lack of confidence/shyness and the fact that other people would just be like "there is no way she could be teacher" - because I was really shy when I was younger. In the past year or so, though, as my confidence has grown quite a bit, I have realised that I probably could make quite a good teacher and so that's the path I will go down unless suddenly something else comes up...which I doubt it will, because I've hardly given any other careers a second thought. Which is very stupid really, because I have no idea what else I would do ( ... )

The PURPLE one! Excellent guess there. :D

Despite having heard a million and one stories and warnings, I've never known anyone who's had their arm broken by a swan or a goose. It's my mission in life to find someone. Oh, but I have seen a big dog (Alasation size) being chased around by a goose, though. That was some funny shit.

Judging by your expremely reassuring and sensible advice, I think you would make a very good teacher. :)
