Yeah so I kinda fell down into a pit of depression and emo-ness again, starting on my birthday (because of course). It has not been helped by my cat (his birthday present to me: vomit! The exact opposite of what I wanted, gee thanks! And then he was just super-gross a moment ago too so am currently fighting the urge to scream and pour bleach into ( Read more... )

HBO/Showtimeyness

What is HBO/Showtimeyness?

I still hope that one day I will magically grow up and start loving boring, depressing TV shows so I can understand what the fuss is about with Mad Men and Breaking Bad

I can't believe you thought Breaking Bad was boring! Sad, I can understand, but not boring. Mad Men, on the other hand, can sometimes be boring, but it's still a good quality show imo. (and on that note: am I understanding you right that you don't like shows being sad in general?)

That's what I call the gratuitous nudity/sexscenes/violence/swearing that those network love so much, I can tolerate it if the show is good enough but it's something that has been bugging me for years. I just feel like it reaches a point where it detracts and distracts from the story rather than add to it. Just because you CAN show something doesn't mean you should, is a phrase that I use quite frequently. ^^

Well it was more in the depressing and generally unappealing area than boring, but all those show are filed under the headline "HELLS NO" in my brain. And yes, you are correct, I violently hate shows that rely too much on sadness. Obviously shows would be boring if they were all happy all the time, but ultimately I watch TV to be entertained. My life is depressing enough as it is, I really don't need any help in that area. ;)

I'm not a big fan of serious, depressing TV shows either but I LOVE Mad Men. Go figure.

I Love Lucy is pretty great, once you get past the fact that Ricky did not treat Lucy very well most of the time. Despite the wackiness it was a total '50s marriage (I did not notice this when I was really obsessed with the show as a child). If you're looking for suggestions of other classic shows, I highly recommend The Addams Family and The Dick Van Dyke Show.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY! That's one show I actually have seen, atleast a bit of! I found a sales bin with random videos in the supermarket when I was little and snatched that one right up, watched it like 200 times. (I spent hours digging in those bins, anytime we were at the store. XD)
The Dick Van Dyke Show is also one of those shows I feel like I should have seen in order to earn my full TV-dork stripes. I should make a full list and then just get to it, now that I'm not obsessively gaming anymore I have the time for TV! :D

I always like reading your tropes! I don't think anyone would care for my answers hehe. One question I would like to answer though ( ... )
