M's Family

An update regarding my sister's family is long overdue. The news has been so sad, overall, that I've battled a sense of defeat thinking about it, much less writing about it. However, there are some upsides worth reporting, even amid what is devastating and so, here goes...

Well... they're kind of barbecued, in a way. Strictly comfort food with the guilt-relieving qualities of being organic and high in fiber.

Brown a pound, or more, of hamburger.
Cook a half a pound of bacon, cut in small pieces (like lardons).
Put in crockpot with a large (not industrial sized) can of your favorite baked beans, and three cans of other kinds of beans (drained and rinsed).
Add ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, spicy barbecue sauce, as you see fit.

Cook.

It's not haute cuisine, but if I take it into work tomorrow, my co-workers will eat it. When I take stuff I like better, like my homemade yellow pepper soup with oven toasts (olive oil, sea salt, pepper, gruyere) on the side, they just kind of smile and don't eat it. Since bringing food in is about connecting, I bow to the mass appeal of beans. :)

That is one kinda smart kid. I'm trying to think where I was at that age, and it was around the time my beloved grandfather died, and being annoying with my parents because they didn't think I was old enough to know what was going on. Mum apologised to me a few ago about that. Kids are usually more flexible about such tragedies than grups.

Currently NZ is full of dysfuctional families, where a father has decided if he can't live with his kids, nobody else will, without considering what "love" really means. If he was capable of OD'ing he's demonstrated a dangerous lack of responsibility Even his son got that message.

Thanks for sharing something so close that often is just a news item. C needs to know he's loved, no matter what.

If you ever watched ST:TOS, you'll know what a grup is.

I'm old enough and geeky enough to have recognized it immediately! :) Nerd.

He is really smart: by birth and by necessity. The best news about him, lately, is that the doc and his therapist are thinking it's less likely that he's bipolar than that he's just been imitating dad ( ... )
