So as most of you might now by now, Japan experienced probably the worst disaster in their recent history sense the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. 1200 people are confirmed dead and with the fact that towns are now FUCKING GONE, the estimated death toll might reach as high as 10,000 ( Read more... )

Yeah, to be honest, I was kind of like UUUUUUHHHHH. If you're going to involve teh animuz in a tragic natural disaster, at least use a character whose defining character trait isn't selfishness.

But on a positive note, at least people seem to be responding generously.

I don't really have anything to say on the matter of Haruhi. Not a big fan of the wikilink you mentioned though. In Japan, people generally do pray. Quite often. The summary on wiki skims over that fact by pointing out that people don't identify with religions or God, but the problem with those facts and figures is that it doesn't recognize that faith in Japan is not closely tied to religion, but to the national culture. People pray. I've been there at the Kawasaki Daishi Temple on New Years as hundreds of thousands of people flood in to make their first prayers of the year. I've planted incense in Asakusa and prayed for good grades on my tests, just as so many students do every year ( ... )

Don't feel bad. I find the earthquake to be pretty heart-wrenching. I can't imagine how it feels for people who have spent time there and have made many close friends and come to love the country on such a personal level.

Obviously my rant has very little to do with the 'praying' commentary and I sort of figured someone more well versed in the culture would come and correct me if I am wrong.

Hell, my whole issue is with Haruhi, if someone had drawn Belldandy praying for the people of Japan, I would not have thought anything of it.

Thank you so much for your understanding. The Tsunami hit close to my heart, but luckily for me, not too close - everyone I know and love are all safe and sound in more southern parts of Japan.

I got an e-mail from a friend today - her and her husband are Gunma police officers. She said the nation is having planned blackout intervals where all of the electricity has to go out and be re-routed to the north to help the emergency areas. She and her fellow officers are busy on the street intersections, redirecting traffic since the signal lights are out during the blackouts.

My friend ended her e-mail not with a "Please help us" but instead with the message: "We're all trying our best here, so keep cheering us on.This goes to show that Japan is a resilient country with dedicated people - every single person works together for the greater good. I'm glad that other countries (especially the US and its military already based there) are doing their best to help, but I think the determination to persevere shines through the Japanese people ( ... )

Haruhi does not like destruction. That is why the Closed Space was created from her own subconscience: To give her an outlet to vent her frustration without causing any damage in the real world.
