I'm so glad I finally have time/mental acuity to start reading this. The writing in this is absolutely gorgeous and incredibly evocative. I find myself wanting to re-read certain paragraphs to study how you do it, how you build such a vivid reality. The opening scene was stunning, especially as I realized that another reality was starting to intrude on the memory of that summer day (and later, how heartbreaking to see Mary again...)
I love how you've started out with Castiel's characterization here, and the contrast of his obedience and focus with Balthazar's wandering eye. He's such an excellent foil for Cas.
I'm looking forward to/dreading seeing how Alastair starts breaking through Dean's mental armor and finally breaking him.
Writing some of this broke my heart into pieces. I wanted to ground it in echoes of Dean's reality, his life with Sam, and the others he cares for. Show what he's losing. It also seemed like it made a contrast for Hell, if I gave Dean these peaceful, earth-bound scenes.
Only just getting around to reading this and I really like it so far. You remind me how much I miss Balthazar on the show (I still struggle to forgive Castiel for what happened D:). I like how you portray the first step to falling as being desire for physical sensations. My memory of S4 is very dim but I never gave much thought to the senses being a temptation for angels, though it does come up in Anna's conversation with Dean.
Also, loving the scene with Jimmy. I wish we had more opportunities to see Jimmy on the show.
Dean being able to escape to his memories is very interesting. It's like he's creating his own Heaven to keep his soul at peace in Hell. It provides a beautiful contrast to the torture he is enduring and is also a clever way of including Sam in the fic (Yay, Sam! <3).
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying it and like what I did with Dean's memories. He is escaping into his own hallucinations/dreams as a way to stay sane. To keep his sense of self intact, his memories of the people who matter to him and have influenced him, with Sam as the most insistent and the one Dean assumes would be his savior if anyone could.
