My main issue with this ep was the Danny/Rachel storyline. I felt it was contrived and forced and seriously, pregnant? They're going there? Danny was devastate by the bitter, bitter divorce according to the beginning of the show. And there's no resentment left? Even from when she threatened to withdraw Danny's custody rights? And then Danny agrees to leave Hawaii with her, despite having a life there on the island? And friends, who, as the show has pointed out to us numerous times, are as close as family?
Who is this pod person? It's not the Danny I know.
Er, I still may be a bit cranky over it all. Especially since it took away from the Steve plot, which was kind of awesomely heartbreaking, and deserved all the drama.
This show has all kinds of giant plot holes you could drive a truck through. Honestly, I was barely worrying over the forced nature of the Danny/Rachel plot, too busy watching the H50 team get torn apart before our very eyes. And I felt so, so sad for Rachel and Gracie alone at the airport, but saw no other way for that to wind up. I think Danny is very sincerely in love with Rachel, and Gracie is his daughter and we know how deeply he loves Gracie, and in that moment, Danny believed this was it for him, that was all he needs. He does love them deeply. But when the team was in crisis, and Steve was in trouble? No way Danny would leave. Sorry but I had no worries about pod person Danny and wasn't a bit surprised when he didn't leave with Rachel and Gracie after all. Because all kinds of family matters on this show.
Now I have to curl up in a little ball and rock back and forth and angst over our pretty, pretty, broken team.
I guess I was less upset over the broken up team because I figure Steve has GOT to know that Danny will move heaven and earth to clear his name. Especially after the experience with Danny's old partner (Meka?). But yeah, Steve looked so broken, and Kono's face, gah, it hurt like hell.
Steve looked pretty broken. Sort of in shock. As if he could hear what Danny was saying, he probably believes it but I don't even know if Steve's getting that fully right now. He looked pretty wrecked.
Oh god this show, breaking its own toys like that. It is very common for shows to pull out the "break up the team at the end of S1" -- it still hurts every time.
I am happily blaming EVERYTHING on Wo Fat, passing out umbrella drinks, and setting up my barge on that awesome river in Egypt. No, seriously, I couldn't figure out what the hell was up with Rachel, but if you go with Wo Fat wanting Danny out of the picture so there's nobody to talk Steve down, and using Rachel to make that happen, it makes, well, not exactly sense, but definitely H50 sense. And it fits with Chin getting a badge AND a promotion and Kono conveniently getting hauled in for an investigation.
How could Wo Fat use Rachel in that though? That makes no sense either. Chin's promotion and Kono being investigated, yep, Wo Fat. Has to be Wo Fat.
No, I think it's called Plot Contrivance to Increase Drama. Except of course some of these guys running this show work for Fringe, and that makes me wonder if next season there will be reveals that it's more than that and things we think don't matter or weren't part of the plot were.
Anyway, count me among those who wasn't fussed over the Rachel plot -- I was too busy feeling terrible for everyone and Rachel and Gracie at the airport alone, so so sad but how else could it go? Because even as Danny was saying, you and Gracie are my family of course I'll go with you to NJ, I LOLed at him because no, Danny isn't going to abandon H50. I felt no anxiety at all on that count.
Yes, I'm totally on board with the 'LOOK AT CHIN AND HIS SHINY NEW BADGE, pay nooo attention to this little thing we dropped in over here, LOOK AT RACHEL, SHE'S PREGNANT, gotcha' theory.
Rachel just went crazy in a hurry, and was so insistent on getting Danny and Grace off Oahu immediately... My brain went with Wo Fat being behind everything else, so why not her, too? Blackmail pictures of her and Danny, or threats against Danny, or then somebody else added that he could know about Danny letting Matt go and could be using that as pressure. And her telling him that she's pregnant is a sure way to catch his attention.
We're either stuck with plot contrivance theater next season, or the Rachel stuff will turn out to be more than it seems. If Wo Fat, say, threatened Gracie's life, and Danny's, Rachel would do anything Wo Fat asked her to do...well, that's not very much less contrived than what we got, but it's possible, and she'd be eager to go along to get her daughter and the guy she's in love with out of danger. The actress did play Rachel as seeming unusually tense. But that could just be OH SHIT BEARS PREGNANT.

Danny will fix it. He's a brilliant detective, he'll find some piece of evidence or unravel something and get Wo Fat over a barrel and save Steve and Chin can work things from the inside in HPD and Kono will be exonerated and Rachel and Gracie will return to Hawaii and then everyone will go out for shave ice.

Chin! I don't believe Chin has betrayed them, he knows he can help them better from the inside. BUT OMG YES CHIN BUT THEN THERE WILL BE THAT MOMENT IN THE GREEN ROOM WHEN CHIN PULLS THE HAMGBURGER OUT OF STEVE'S HAND AND WALL SLAMS HIM. BECAUSE CHIN IS 5-OH FOREVER BABY.
Kono's faaaaaace, Lass. And Danny trying to reassure her and calm her down. Danny was trying to keep everyone from breaking. Oh, Danny.
Jenna just works there. These people are nuts but she likes them a lot. She is so cute.
Jenna is so very much the n00b thrown in with the cool kids and in over her head and her adorable awkwardness when they NOTICE HER and admire what she's done and how competent she is and quick-thinking and yet has so much to learn, young grasshopper, maybe Kono can train with her. Someone should write Kono and Jenna sparring fic.

The CBS up fronts are tomorrow. I somehow have little doubts they would renew but STILL. We go into this WITHOUT EVEN AN OFFICIAL RENEWAL.
