My brain just went to a knee-jerk place on it at first. Probably because this was during the early time of the scary spoilers and I panicked. /o\
But I loooooove what they did there, that Dean condemned Castiel's actions while at the same time it was Dean speaking from the place of having been there, done that, and that's all the more reason for him to be so vehement about trying to get Cas to stop his fall.
I think Castiel will come around, I do. And Dean won't give up. The way that scene played, the sadness and hurt -- Dean's not wanting to lose Castiel.
Exactly! The language was written as somewhat absolute--"what we don't do--" but the context, the character history, the delivery, this was Dean scared he's going to lose another family member and he horror of this happening in his family over and over again. And the rest of them have figured it out and Cas hasn't walked through that fire yet.
... I've never even seen that show and now I think I should because that quote is so perfect I can't even. But. YES. THAT. OH. MY. GOD. YES. THAT. *incoherent*
Yes, exactly. I never felt Dean was being hypocritical. Dean's learned from experience. He knew. He understood. He's been there. I think it was one of the things I liked best about that episode.
Honestly, I was scared the show was going to go a certain way with this and use Castiel a certain way -- and that may have prompted my knee-jerk initial thoughts.
But it makes so much sense now! And I think it's purposeful, the script is using the contrast of do as I say, not as I do pointedly. Dean knows it, Ben Edlund figures the audience knows it, and it's Dean telling Castiel, I've fallen off that cliff and trust me you don't want to fall off that cliff, falling off that cliff sucks so come sit over here by me.
Only Castiel is still backing away from Dean towards the cliff. /o\

DON'T GO OFF THE CLIFF CAS, HANG ON JUST A LITTLE BIT LONGER!
I really desperately hope that Dean helps Cas no matter what Cas says.
