I'm pretty sure it's Sam's hunt, since early on we get Dean complaining that this case is a waste of time and they should be hunting down Bela instead.

So, after a string of shared hunts, the first time Sam initiates one by himself against Dean's wishes, Dean gets killed. A lot.

Remember when Sam would find hunts and Dean didn't get killed over and over and over?

It's almost like Sam's being punished for his sense of self. Sam thinks he has to become like Dean to survive the war = Shared initiations. Sam initiates a hunt = Dean dies, Sam turns into a harder, more bitter version of John.

I think they're not done with the autonomy arc.
