Well, with the wide range of accents and dialects that English encompasses, I seriously doubt there is any hope for this particular type of error, no matter how English is "rationalized."
Most people I know would pronounce the word /blāt·ənt/, which doesn't give any clue whatsoever whether the last vowel should be "e" or "a." Spelling in English is difficult because English is an acquisitive language; this same feature give English its phenomenal richness and depth. To "fix" that really would be like fixing a puppy: The language would be emasculated.

The lack of consistent spelling rules and pronunciation. I have problems with a lot of a/e spelling myself.
