Looking through the archives at the BBC’s On This Day, I find the following:

8th April 1986 Clint Eastwood becomes Mayor of Carmel in California

10th April 1998 Northern Ireland peace deal reached - The Good Friday Agreement

And of course, the date of the General Election was announced yesterday.

They had told him that the Catholics were a threat, that they were cruel and sub-human: Catholic men raped Protestant women and killed their children. It was essential that Ireland be subdued. And so he had followed Cromwell, killed the men, who were just protecting their own, and murdered defenceless women in church. What threat had these people been?

Now he had lost an arm, fighting for the safety of the realm. But he had lost more. He had left England knowing doubts, he was returning feeling not just the pain from his arm, but the pain of betrayed beliefs.
