I think Annie in the show is either Sam's idealised view of an innocent woman, or the writers' wholly inaccurate and rose-tinted view of how women were, "all those years ago". By 1973 most women under about thirty considered themselves totally equal to men and expected to have full choice in what we did in life. (It's a good job we didn't realise that some things would still be less than ideal thirty years later, but the fact remains that our expectations and self-image weren't much different from nowadays ( ... )
