.
2:25 Fuck's sake, what's fucking Hervey done to him this time? Whatever it was, he's now giving him gas and he's out on the foreshore AGAIN. This was an excellent visual metaphor for when he's being asleep or unconscious.
3:10 Dammit I thought for a moment that was Jemima but it's only Esther. I simply do not believe in any relationship or feelings between Marlott and her. I really wish they'd kept Jemima for series 2.
4:30 Fuck's sake, Hervey's got Marlott chained up and breathing some kind of gas down in the fucking icehouse.
5:45 Ooh, burn. "Blessed are the meek of heart, for they shall see God" says Marlott, and Hervey comes straight back with "And did you, John? See God?" Which afaik he didn't, he just went looking for his wife and daughter before getting dragged back, but they'd gone on without him.
8:30 Marlott asks Dippel why he doesn't just kill himself, end it. Dippel's reply is awful.
"Death - that does not end this *pointing perhaps at Marlott's brain. There's NOTHING beyond the shoreline, just the cold water and the wind rolls on and on into eternity." Marlott is already convinced Heaven is closed to him.
10:00 "You must calm yourself Mr Renquist. The Duke of Clarence is a naval man, he has no interest in court or church"
13:10 Look, there's entirely not enough Marlott going on in this episode. I am watching this show purely for Sean Bean and I expect him to be on my screen, OK? Also, how am I supposed to concentrate on the story when I'm worried about Marlott drugged unconscious in a fucking icehouse?
14:30 Hervey's giving Esther the stuff. Is it irrevocable? OK if she doesn't take another one in 8 years she'll die, but is she actually changed in some important way by this one dose? Is this actually killing her in a normal sense?
And the maid is - I hope - about to rescue Marlott.
18:15 So did Esther not make it then? That scene was intercut with Marlott doing nothing much in particular in the icehouse.
18:55 He's walking out deeper into the water than he has done before, he's now past the first line of breakers. He's dragging Esther out of the water and back on the table she suddenly awakes and takes a huge gasping breath.
20:25 Fuck's sake I basically don't give a shit about all these people - Hervey and Esther and Dippel - I just want to know what's happening with John Marlott.
25:40 "It's not your decision". "That's exactly what it is - she is my bride. My property." Not yet she isn't, fucker. So she lamps him over the back with a poker, tells him "I am no-one's" and legs it with Marlott.
The King is dead and Renquist is dead, disguised and in a plague pit.
28:25 Inspector Treadaway reports to Sir Robert Peel. Proof that it was all Hervey.
29:25 Hervey asks Sir Robert to talk to the Dean of Westminster, who will plead his innocence.
29:45 Marlott and Esther have gone back to her shop because she wants to see her son. But according to Dippel he follows her everywhere, so the fact that Marlott hasn't seen him doesn't look good. He's actually got a very bandy-legged walk, perhaps that's what people mean when they apparently say they've never seen a man more born to ride a horse.
30:05 "Yes, I see the dead. But not my own family, my wife, my daughter. I'm sorry Esther, we don't see our own dead." Blimey, and that was her entire reason for taking the stuff that bastard Hervey gave her.
31:05 Oh, she's finally dragged out a second facial expression.
Marlott and Esther have realised they need to forget about God and guilt and other people's morals, and live by their own sensibilities. "We must live" I think he says [check that].
So this is pretty much winding things up. I mean, I'd love to see another series, but what we have here is Marlott deciding to move forward - presumably with Esther, boring and unbelievable - and actually LIVE.
Meanwhile, where are Marlott's own belongings? His trunk etc, his photos?
Again I say, far too much Not-Marlott.
34:25 Hah, the Dean of Westminster says he's had no contact with Hervey for two years "since your flight to the continent". So he didn't go immediately after he resurrected Marlott, he waited a year?
But does Sir Robert know about the Dean?
So we seem to be cycling through each of the characters, finishing off their stories. We're now on Boz, and if the episode doesn't actually end on Marlott looking happy I am going to be fucking pissed off.
36:05 "Where is it? Hard Times in Devil's Acre, where is it? Where's my STORY? Didn't Dickens write a book called Hard Times? Boz resigns to find a publisher who will share his views.
37:05 And now we're with Dippel looking at creepy automaton girl.
Hmm, Hervey has hidden a tiny vial of something in the wall of his cell.
"The dead demand justice. And it falls to me to deliver it." Argh, he thinks he's forever damned already so presumably he thinks a spot of righteous murder can't do any more damage to his immortal soul. This is a strong argument against the concept of sin, hell, and damnation imo.
"The righteous show mercy and give. You were right about me, Father. I am John Marlott." That sounds more like a declaration of intent than actually makes sense.
40:05 Now he's saying goodbye to the players and to Esther, and he is actually looking very happy. Several references to him choosing "another path". He even says a friendly goodbye to Billy Oates, who acknowledges it with a nod and "soldier".
40:40 Oh bless, her son is sitting in the cart behind her. Marlott gives him a little wink.
41:45 Now he's down on the foreshore while awake, looking out to sea. So our last view is of his back, with him looking forwards. No last glance back like Sharpe. But at least he definitely ended the series happy which is all I wanted.
