have you considered trying zicam? the commercials all say it's wonderful, and you could be everyone's personal reference.

if the mucous is the big problem, you could also try an expectorant to clear it out. i've used bronkaid, and thought it worked fabulously, but it gives me one helluva case of the jitters.
