From the beginning the cab thing baffed me.  How is it, just as soon as he wants one a cab mysterious and miraculously appears?  It doesn’t seem to matter if he’s up some dark, deserted alley or in the busy streets of London, an empty cab pulls up at the merest gesture of his hand.   It took longer but eventually it even started to happen to me, it
