Gert was waiting for Victor as he slipped out of the church. She could hear the choir still singing inside, but apparently Victor had had enough chuchy Christmas cheer for the night. His shoulders were hunched, and his hands were buried in his pockets as he walked, making a picture of Christmas misery. All they needed was some snow, and it would have been perfect.

At Gert’s side, Old Lady whuffled at her hair, and she reached over to stroke the dinosaur’s neck. Victor strolled over to them, hands still in his pockets. “Not Molly tonight?” he noted.

“She wanted to get to sleep early,” Gert said. “You know how she is.”

“She doesn’t actually believe in Santa, right?” Victor asked. Gert just shrugged, wearing a ‘who can tell’ expression.

“So, good mass?”

Victor returned Gert’s shrug with one of her own. “I wanna say I’ve been to better, but…”

“Come on. Chase has egg nog with rum in it, and if we hurry, we can get some.”
