Dead leaves crunched sullenly underfoot as Wanda marched from the car to the marble steps of her sons’ school, Vision trailing behind her with only the quiet whisper of barely stirred air to mark his passing. She stopped at the edge of the stairs and looked up, her hands balled into fists and pressed to her hips.
“I hate parent/teacher conferences,” she said, tossing her hair over her shoulder with a shake of her head.
“I know,” Vision replied, climbing the steps. He already had this conversation memorized; they’d had it at least once a year since the boys had started school. Usually more often, since Billy and Tommy seemed to attract trouble.
“We could home school them,” Wanda went on, following Vision up the steps. “Or just pull them out all together. I never had a formal education.”
“Yes, dear.”
“And that principal is an odious little toad who could never understand our boys and would probably turn them over to any super villain who came along in order to save his own skin. It would probably be best if we withdrew them right away.”
“Of course, Wanda.”
She would go one like this for a good long while, Vision knew, but ultimately she would decide that it was best that Billy and Tommy have as normal a life as possible, and in this country, that meant high school, then college, and she did have her heart set on getting one of them into something in the Ivy League (whether the boys wanted it or not). So tomorrow, Wanda would roust the boys from their beds and usher them off to school, just like always.
It was just that time of the year again.
