Bitter Homecoming. Mentions of character death, so be warned. But it’s only Tony Stark, so no big.
Kate’s arm was acting up again, and it was throwing her aim off. It was just by a bit, but being off by even a fraction of an inch could cost lives. With a grunt of annoyance, she set her bow aside and sat down, reaching for the tool box. Ever since Stark had died fighting the Brood and Victor had disappeared to find himself, she’d had to get good at self repair.
She had just gotten the forearm panel open when Jonas came in, looking surprisingly distressed for someone who didn’t show whatever emotions he had very much any more. “What now?” she asked wearily. “Tell me Night Thrasher and his cronies haven’t found this safe house.” She closed the panel without even starting the repairs she needed.
Jonas shook his head. [I’m afraid it’s worse than that. The other Avengers are under attack from Skrulls.]
“God, just when I thought they’d given up for good,” Kate moaned. “We don’t need a war on two fronts, and asshats or not, the other guys don’t need the hassle of Skrulls on top of everything else.”
[Kate… Teddy was with the Skrulls.]
The screwdriver dropped out of Kate’s suddenly nerveless fingers. “No,” she said, shaking her head in denial. “No, he wouldn’t-”
[Wherever Teddy went, Billy always followed,] Jonas added. [Now we know where Teddy went, and you can be sure Billy isn’t far away… if he’s still alive.]
“We’ve got to get moving,” Kate said, snatching up her bow. “If we can just talk to them-”
Tom came crashing through the wall, thrown by an explosive force that knocked Kate and Jonas off their feet as Billy floated through the hole after his doppelganger, a black cape snapping around his ankles. Twenty years ago, he would have marked this arrival with some kind of joke. Instead, he zapped Jonas into inertness and snapped Kate’s cybernetic arm in half before she could raise her bow in any kind of attack.
“B-billy…” Kate gasped as feedback from the implants that let her control the arm as if it were her own caused the world to go white, then red.
He looked down at her, still hovering above the grounds, as if he were too good to touch the soil. “William,” he corrected as Skrull soldiers flooded the safe house.
