In the filthy, dark alley, Klara stood alone, looking at the all too rare blazes of color that forced their way out from the spaces between the cobblestones. This place had once been a road, but hastily erected buildings had blocked most of it, making it accessible only by climbing out a window or squeezing through the scant space between two of the buildings.
This was her place, where she could coax her little beauties out of the ground. A little push was all it took for the plants that called out to her to push the stones aside, climbing desperately up the sides of the buildings and blooming beautifully under Klara’s care.
At least, they did until her husband followed her out one day, an axe in his hand. She could only watch in horror as he pulled down vines and hacked up everything green and beautiful until it was dead at her feet.
“Clean up this mess.”
Klara bowed her head, whispering, “Yes, sir.”
