“You should do that more often.”
Klara looked up from the little rosebush she was nurturing to find Chase watching her, his baseball cap pushed up. She flinched away a little and squeaked in surprise. “What?”
Chase pulled his hat back down, shading his eyes. “Smile,” he said. “You don’t do it much, but you’ve got a nice one.”
Klara fixed her eyes on the rosebush and swallowed. “I will try,” she whispered. She heard Chase sigh, bringing her to look up again. Tentatively, she gave him a small, shy smile. He returned it with a grin and a nod.
“See?” he said. “That’s a pretty smile right there.”
Klara ducked her head again, feeling her face get hot. “If you say so.”
“You okay?” Chase asked, crouching beside the girl. “You want me to leave you alone, Klara?”
“I’m fine. You’re fine. It doesn’t matter.” She wiped her hands on her skirt and stood, keeping her head bowed and her eyes averted from the young man.
“Alright. Nico’s conned me into running the shopping trip today… you just know that’s gonna end badly. Anything I can get you while I’m out?” he asked.
“Why are you doing this?” Klara asked softly.
“Being nice? Because I like you. You’re a nice girl, and I wanna see you smile more often.”
