Paras was sitting in the chair by the door when Victor finally gathered the strength to open his eyes as much as they would go. Even that hurt, so Victor guessed that he was sporting a spectacular pair of black eyes, and that Josh was still off on one of his walkabouts. He tried to smile, and tasted blood as tiny cuts on his lips opened up. “You’re okay.”
“Of course I am okay.” Paras armored up, causing the chair beneath him to creak ominiously. “I am capable of withstanding a great deal more damage than you. I have never seen you do something so suicidaly foolish before.”
“Someone had to keep the Purifiers busy during the evacuation, and you were hurt,” Victor managed to croak out. “Everyone else…?”
“The children made it out little more than a few bumps and scratches. You, on the other hand…” Paras retracted his armor. “Never do that again,” he said seriously. “Next time, I will snap your foolish neck myself.”
