“You know, I think this is the first birthday we’ve spent together that I can remember,” Sean said, poking his cake with his fork and not looking at his mother as she stole a forkful.
“I’ve been there for your birthdays,” Jubilee protested.
“Name one, aside from before I got stuck in that alternate future or the better part of a decade.”
Jubilee granted her son a hurt look. “I don’t want a fight, Sean. It’s spring, it’s a nice day, and it’s your birthday-”
“And you’re feeling guilty because Dad’s gone. Next March you’ll forget all about it.”
“Sean-” He started to rise, but Jubilee grabbed his arm. “Sean. I know I wasn’t always there when I should have been, but I always loved you and your father. Every thing that I’ve done was to make sure you two could live safely.”
“I know.” He gently removed her hand and walked away.
