“She’s not coming,” Sean said, checking to make sure his mic was plugged in while the rest of his band warmed up. Off to the side of the stage, he could see Franklin Richards and his band chatting and laughing.
Have a little faith, Jono admonished gently. She’ll be here.
“You keep saying that, but she never shows,” the empath muttered sourly.
“Sean, babe, you’re talking to yourself again.”
“Hm? Oh. Sorry. Talking to Dad, actually.” Sean jerked his chin towards the back of the auditorium, where his father sat. The first band was just finishing, so Sean jerked his thoughts away from his ever-absent mother and prepared to launch into the first song of their set.
“Next up,” the MC growled over the speakers, “Theeeee MORLOCKS!”
Sean gave the count, and they launched into a cover of I’m Not Okay (I Promise), which segued easily into The Kids Aren’t Alright, before they finished with The Devil’s Dance Floor. The audience might have been there to see Franklin strut his stuff, but by God, the Morlocks were going to give them a good show.
Sean? Guess who’s here.
Sean didn’t even hear Franklin’s band start as he gaped at his mother, sitting in the back row with a video camera. “Well bugger me sideways.”
