Matt glared at the pint in front of him with no small amount of frustration. It didn’t do any good, but neither did glaring at the source of his annoyance.
“Drink up, lad,” MacBeth said, tapping the table, “before you turn it sour with your looks.”
“Why won’t you tell me?”
The immortal swallowed his sigh with a long pull from his flagon. “What good will the knowing do you? Everyone involved is centuries dead.”
“Except for you,” Matt pointed out.
“Except for me,” MacBeth agreed. “And I hardly remember it at all.”
Matt gave him a startled look, and the old Scot laughed. “You think my memory’s perfect, lad? I’m immortal, not infallible. For me, it was no more than a pleasant diversion, a way to pass a little time.” He shrugged. “Others may say what they will, but the greatest bane of immortality is boredom.”
“Oh.” Matt finally took a drink, and he made a face. Warm beer. Yeuch. “What do you do to keep yourself from getting bored?”
“Oh,” MacBeth said casually, though there was a predatory glint in his eye, “this and that. This and that.”
