Victor Borkowski nearly leapt out of his skin as the voice slipped into his brain. What he did do was fall out of the tree he was perched in, landing with an ‘oof’ in an ungraceful heap.
He scrambled to his feet and found Chamber watching him, amusement clear in his brown eyes. Victor then scrambled backwards and managed to trip over his own feet, almost hitting the ground. He was saved from landing on his ass again by the telepath grabbing his arm and hauling him back up. Okay, squire?
The words slipped softly into his brain, like good music. They settled there while the British mutant looked at him expectantly. “Fine,” Victor finally squeaked. “I’m fine.”
Good. Chamber released his arm. Didn’t mean to scare you. What’re you doing out here?
“I’m. Um. I was just.” Victor stared at his feet, darting glances at the rolling ball of energy in Chamber’s chest.
Looking for a place to think? he suggested.
Victor nodded mutely.
Good place for it.

It was almost two weeks before Victor came close to Jono again. He waited patiently, letting the boy take things at his own pace.
This time, he let Victor break the silence.
“Why do you come here?”
To think about things.
“Things?”
Why I’m here, at the school.
“… why are you here?”
Hopefully, for more than what I’ve been doing.
