I want to write a novel but I don't know where to start.

I also don't want to go to work today, but I never want to go to work.

An idea would be a good place. And then some research into what's already been done in the genre you're writing about, locations, invention of whatever you need to invent, character work, backstories... lots of fun. I have similar desires, but no idea to work with.

This is normal, as I understand it.

The lack of idea is the heart of my problem, hence the lack of a starting point. I've made attempts before, but the idea has never lasted long enough to carry an entire novel. I've written short stories that I'm very proud of, but it's a different kind of effort.
