Aw man! Why don't you like Artemis Fowl D: I love those books so much! Although, since you are talking about media some stories are supposed to be told in, I only heard the audiobooks, have stopped counting how often I've listened to them actually More than a dozen times each probably, I even own all of them. Nathaniel Parker does such a magnificent job I think that all the characters find their voice and I really don't see the issue with motivation that's bothering you. Do you happen to have an example?
I think format has a big role in why I disliked reading AF in book form. I read it as an ebook that was riddled with formatting errors and got extremely frustrated and distracted from the story. I thought reading it again in graphic novel form might improve my view of it, and it did, somewhat.
However, I still think that Artemis is one of the snottiest 12 year-olds I've ever "met", and I used to teach 6th grade! Maybe he gets better in the sequels?
My issue with motivation mostly hinges on Holly. She's the only female in her unit, and is supposedly very competent, but she inexplicably doesn't do the Ritual and mucks up every operation that comes her way.
Maybe I didn't articulate myself correctly though. I suppose my biggest issue with the book is not motivation of the characters, but the characters themselves. I found them all unlikeable and rather flimsy in characterization.
I finished the book not wanting to read any of the sequels, but you like them so much that I might try one of the audiobooks.
Forgot to say, I also really hated how much Colfer continually reiterated how "Mud People" were horrible and ruining the Earth and violent while the People were doing much the same. Holly wears wings that use gasoline, the fairies use scorching guns and bio-bombs that kill entire areas of life.
It left a bad taste in my mouth and felt overdone and hypocritical.
Well, to me Ithe idea of a more advanced society dissing what they consider to be apes in comparison (you should hear Opal go on about that, it's hilarious) has its merrits. I think one of the reasons this is so important in the books is that it's supposed to work as a contrast, that even though the people are more advanced, they are still not more evolved when it comes to certain things, especially when it comes to attitude. Some of the decisions the council makes are really questionable and I think one of the characters even remarks on how power-hungry people are the same the world over, be they fairy or human
