Hard at work...

May 16, 2007 14:17

Kat re-tied the strings of her apron into a lazy bow while she stared at the book of espresso recipes, determined to find something to keep her awake. The last few weeks were running together, blending into a hazy blur. She had moved into the hotel, but she hadn't really had any time to stick around and socialize with her two jobs. She had tried to ( Read more... )

Things around the office had been mostly quiet ever since the vampire's son had taken Faith dimension-hopping. James had managed to get his other daughter, Grace, to join up at the firm so at least that seemed to appease him for the time being. Harry had been keeping away from the office since Sophia had thrown her Aurelian-worthy tantrum on their CEO ( ... )

"Regular coffee, huh? Too bad, I can do all kinds of neat tricks, tossin' syrup bottles around and such!" she drawled with a shrug of her shoulders.

She keyed the order into the register and spun on her heel to grab one of the cups. She reached over to grab the coffee pot, causing her sleeve to move just enough to reveal one of the more interesting new battle wounds she aquired. Fred assured her she wouldn't die or anything, but the fact that it was tinged with vibrant hues of maroon would make anyone wonder just what sort of fight she'd gotten herself into. She turned back around, coffee in hand and fished the change out of her register drawer.

"Okay, Aidan, here you go, one regular coffee and your change," she said.

"Thank you," he said and smiled as he took the change. "I tend to stick to the regular coffee instead of specialty drinks when I'm just trying to keep myself going throughout the day. Anything else makes me a little jittery."

He took a sip of the coffee and nodded in appreciation. "Although, with coffee as good as this, I might have to make an exception next time. And to see those neat tricks of yours."

There was still that little nagging in the back of his mind that had Aidan wanting to find out a little bit more about this girl.

"Have you worked here long?" He asked idly, still sipping at his coffee. "I have to admit I'm not a regular customer here, but I don't recall seeing you in the times I have stopped by."

"Oh, I've worked here a couple of months. I moved here from Memphis not too long ago, so I'm still pretty new to the area. But, I've only been working here part time since I have this other job to help pay the rent. Although, rent isn't an issue now..." and, at that, she paused to grin. "I actually have a place that doesn't charge me a thing to live there! I think I used to be a hotel or something. Pretty neat though, huh?"

Nodding a bit, Aidan glanced down at his watch and noted the time. "I had a few errands to run, but ithey're nothing that couldn't wait a couple days. I mostly left the office to find new scenery anyway. I'll be glad to wait here until your shift is over."

He smiled a bit at her. "At least as long as you do your magic and fix me up another cup. I'll have a latte this time, I think."

Pulling out a few more bills, he placed them on the counter and cocked his head around the room before settling his eyes back on Kat. "Let me know if I need to have a conversation with your employer. I'm sure he'll be disappointed to lose such a valuable employee."

Aidan flashed her another smile and leaned against the counter. Another slayer to add to the firm's list of assets. Perhaps James would be pleased, but Aidan wasn't sure if he cared what James would think right at this moment. He was too curious of the girl standing in front of him for that to matter.

"Ah, latte. Good man. Smart, practical people order lattes. Pretentious snobs order cappuccino, thinking it's something real special. But, it's just a latte with the milk all foamed up instead of drinkable. No other difference except wasted milk" she said with a nearly goofy grin as she keyed the order into her register. She fished the change out of the door and handed it to him. "You start to learn things about people based on their coffee choices. It's one of those things that helps pass the time, I guess ( ... )

He smiled as he watched her make his drink and was amused at the compliment she paid him just for the choice of a latte. "I'll be sure make sure your boss is able to find someone to replace you as soon as possible. The replacement won't be nearly as valuable as you, I'm sure, but hopefully he won't be too disappointed ( ... )

"You're a senior partner? Oh, wow! Will I ever see you at the office then? I'm guessing that I'd be something of the entry-level variety or perhaps just an intern or something? But, you'd show me special projects? I really don't know what I did to impress you that much, but wow, I'm still kind of in shock over the whole you're a senior partner thing," she said, as she started to clean up the area behind the counter. She tried to think of a good answer to his question while she busied herself with washing the various glasses, spoons, and pitchers she'd been using.

She glanced up at the clock and mentally noted that Tina should be coming in, any minute. She really didn't like her since she insisted on calling Kat Kitty and often meowed at her. Irritating girl. She shrugged her shoulders as she dried off the things with a towel. What did set her apart? Other than the obvious slayer bit? Or, maybe there was something about the slayer thing that made her special? She was tempted to just tell him how she protected the city nightly, but ( ... )
